Longing for the Future

Jeff Lanuza

Jeff Lanuza, born in Guatemala in 1986, studied photography in the Loyola University in Quetzaltenango, getting a degree in Digital photography. He moved to Switzerland at the end of 2012, where he started studying photography at the F+F Schule für Kunst und Design in Zürich.

Visual Reflections

Young photographers in Mali and Switzerland present their visual reflections on the experiences and perspectives of young people and their transition to adulthood. Photo students at the Cadre de Promotion pour la Formation en Photographie in Bamako (Mali) visualise life trajectories derived from the research project 'Construire son Avenir'. Students at the F+F Schule für Kunst und Design in Zurich (Switzerland) transpose transversal themes in these life stories into their own social and cultural context. A selection of the pictures are at display at exhibitions in Bamako, Basel and Ougadougou.      

This project is based on myself using my family as a medium of selfexploration to express certain things about my past, and my ambitions for the

future.

This series evolved from a different idea, born at the beginning of the project. The initial concept was to work with a Dominican Woman who immigrated to Switzerland following love, but due to certain circumstances she had to leave her partner, leaving her in a tough position economically and sentimentally.

As the project followed its course, interviews with her were getting difficult to obtain, until she felt very vulnerable, and decided to leave the project.

With the material I had, I decided to use her story as an inspiration instead of documentation.

The main idea is to use different stages from my past (vulnerability, happiness, love, uncertainty and even anger among others), to show how they affected my personality in the present, and my longings for the future.
