Pierre: Many ambitions
Pierre was born in 1982 and grew up in Ioba, one of the 45 provinces of Burkina Faso, located in its Sud-Ouest Region.
Pierre is the eldest son and has four brothers and three sisters. His father is a retired primary teacher and his mother a housewife. When he finished his a-levels in 2003 he left his village started studying law at the University of Ouagadougou.

Pierre (*1982) is from Ioba, a Southeastern province of Burkina Faso. He is the eldest of four brothers and three sisters. When he finished his A-levels, he leaves his village to study law at the university of Ouagadougou. He is very ambitious and would like to join the foreign service. But he soon recognizes that this aim is illusory without the help of acquaintances, relations, friends – his father is a retired primary school teacher without a network in Ouagadougou. So his chances in this regard are practically zero. Nevertheless he has ambitious objectives and bright prospects to attain them. Indeed, Pierre is facing many difficulties during his studies, mostly linked to financial problems. He even has to interrupt his studies because he is unable to support himself in Ouagadougou. When his landlord urges him to pay his rent, he goes into hiding in his parent’s house and is lucky that his father can help him with money after some weeks. He manages to do an internship at “Africa Motors” where he can gain precious work experience.

Later on he enrolls in a master studies program in administrative law at a private university, but towards the end he again runs out of money and has to postpone his examination. He instead starts working as counselor-at-law in a consulting agency during a trail period, which is in fact a promising stepping-stone in his career. In the beginning he appreciates his job and is proud of his office with a view. But then he realizes that he is being exploited while the conclusion of his working contract is constantly being set back. Moreover, his boss is permanently interfering in Pierre’s work, as he can tap on bribe money there easily. Pierre is also angered because he is not being paid provisions. As he is striving for a high income, he wants to leave the agency as soon as possible. And he finally wants to marry his girlfriend; so far he did not have enough money to pay the dowry and the ceremonies:
During the next months it’s all about finding something better, a better, stable job. And then I want to get engaged; therefore you have to organize a small festivity in Ouaga. But more important is visiting her parent's village and to ask her hand in marriage. That’s what I couldn’t do so far, but what I want to do next.

Quand il finit son baccalauréat, il quitte son village pour étudier le droit à l’université de Ouagadougou. Il est vraiment ambitieux et voudrait rejoindre le service des affaires étrangères. Mais très tôt il reconnaît que cela est une illusion, comme il n’a pas de relations pour l’aider. Son père est un enseignant du primaire retraité sans aucune connexion à Ouagadougou. Ainsi donc sa chance se présente pratiquement comme nulle.

Néanmoins, il a des objectifs ambitieux et il a de brillantes perspectives pour les réaliser. Pierre fait face à de nombreuses difficultés tout au long de ses études et le plus important est lié aux problèmes financiers. Il a même interrompu ses études une fois car il n’est plus en mesure de vivre à Ouagadougou. Comme le bailleur le presse de payer sa son loyer, il se réfugie chez ses parents et il a de la chance que son père peut l’aider avec un peu d’argent après quelques semaines. De retour à Ouaga il peut faire un stage à « Africa Motors » où il obtient une expérience de travail précieuse. Plus tard il fait des études de master en droit administratif dans une université privée mais avant la fin, une fois de plus, il manque d’argent et doit repousser son examen terminal. Il a plutôt commencé à travailler en probation comme conseiller en droit dans une agence de consultation qui est en fait une piste prometteuse pour sa carrière. Au début il apprécie son travail et est heureux d’y être, mais plus tard il comprend qu’il est exploité car la fin de son contrat de stage est constamment repoussée. De plus, son boss, en permanence s’ingère dans ses termes de référence, comme il peut facilement se faire l’argent là-bas et Pierre est fâché à cause de ça. Comme il s’efforce d’avoir un revenu, il veut quitter l’agence le plus tôt possible. Et finalement il veut marier sa petite amie, car jusqu’ici il n’a pas suffisamment d’argent pour payer la dot et les cérémonies :
Les mois à venir c’est toujours dans la dynamique de la recherche d’un mieux-être, toujours chercher un meilleur job pour être vraiment stable, c’est surtout ça. Et puis, les mois à venir, quand tu fais la cour à une fille là, c’est vrai qu’il y a une petite présentation qui est faite à Ouaga ici mais il faut qu’on parte au village. Ça c’est pas encore fait, je compte en tout cas le faire d’ici là.
